What is Internet, IP, IPv4 & IPv6?

   What is IP?

Every device on the computer network is assigned an internet protocol (IP) address, a numerical address which forms the basis of Internet communication. IP is the principal communications protocol that enables internetworking, and establishes the Internet. The Internet is a network of networks. It is a global collection of different networks which are connected to form a single entity called the Internet.

Why a New IP?

6   IPv6  December 1998 version            (formerly SIP, SIPP)

Early Internet History

But ever wondered why we needed internet in first place? Internet is needed to browse about various stuff and connect from one latitude & longitude of earth to another one around the globe via  World Wide Web (WWW). Internet was initially used in Defense only, it came to commercial existence in 1995. It catered  20 devices at that time but now 20 million devices are thriving on it.  The internet accrued 50 million users in just 5 years whereas it took TV 13 years to do that. I won’t be exaggerating if I say19% of married couples meet online, making it the most successful method for meeting the “one” !! Hence the impact on internet is immense!

Recent Internet History : The “boom”

Electronic and knowledge connectivity leads to economic connectivity leading to an inclusive growth across all sections of society. Blogs and social networking have also taken the world by storm.  In 21st century, the growth and development of a nation is reliant on advances in Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs). With “fog computing” or a network to collect data from devices making up the “Internet of Things (IoT)”, our world is definitely about to change.

Education, Telemedicine and Financial services are now enabled on the Internet and the accessibility of these services has become device independent. Many apps have been developed for ease of accessibility. Major search brands such as Google, Yahoo and MSN realized the dichotomy and hence developed solutions for mobile Internet.

Internet access via mobile is gaining momentum. In many parts of world, the first screen seen by a citizen is cell phone.

With new applications and websites being launched every single day, It is no wonder that the Internet and World Wide Web are growing at a gigantic pace. Internet has revolutionized the way we live, think and analyze and it has made possible for everybody to learn about anything they want at the click of a button. With so many benefits, it is clear that that it will continue to reign as the single most powerful technology for the generations to come.

Some even say that Internet should be recognized as a fundamental right to all citizens!!! Internet has evolved into an important medium for connecting not only people but also people with devices. Since the world is rapidly moving towards the concept of knowledge society based on ubiquitous and continuous availability of information, the next gen IPv6 will play an important role in ensuring open, secure & sustainable growth of internet.

The strange thing about living through a revolution is that it’s very difficult to see what’s going on! We’re living through a radical transformation of our communications environment..  people tend to overestimate the short-term impact of new technologies — and to underestimate their long-term implications.
